Hits-To-Lead (HTL) is a research division under Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical (IPharm) that focused on two different aspects in drug development; drug discovery and drug delivery. Drug discovery works are conducted with the application of simulated drug design and computational works with an aim of discovering new potential chemical entities from naturally occurring plants. The hits obtained from the simulations are further characterized with extractions and synthesis works in the actual laboratory.
In the field of drug delivery, the division is focused in reformulating drugs which have issues and problems in term of solubility and bioavailability by employing advanced drug delivery systems. It is generally accepted that an effective drug formulated inappropriately will have detrimental effects on the efficacy of the drug as well as patients’ compliance. To date, HTL is actively exploring a number of drug delivery systems including nanoparticle, nanoemulsion and liposome.
Besides exploring pharmaceutical-related aspects of drug development, HTL is also pursuing a separate research on nutraceutical formulations. In this approach, natural products such as mangosteen skin and asam jawa are being formulated in different ways with an aim to produce beneficial science-driven nutraceutical products through research and development activities.
