DIVISION OF BIOPROCESS

The Bioprocess department is one of the divisions in the Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical (IPHARM). One of the key researches carried out by this department is the production and application of a bacterial polymer known as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are polymers of hydroxyalkanoates (HA) synthesized and accumulated as granules in the cytoplasm of numerous bacteria. PHA serves as intracellular carbon and energy storage compound. PHAs are promising materials for various applications, because they have useful mechanical properties, as well as being bio-degradable and biocompatible. Therefore, PHAs have recently attracted interest in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, such as for tissue engineering and as drug delivery systems. Current studies in this division focus on:

  • Sustainable production of PHA using locally isolated Cupriavidus spp. and mutant strain of Cupriavidus USMAA1020

  • Attaining a variety of PHA based biomaterial for various pharmaceutical and medical applications

  • Developing controlled drug releasing systems & product development.
